The industry-standard criterion is the purity of ZnO on a calcined dry basis. This refers to the percentage of pure zinc oxide as the effective component after removing inert impurities—such as free water, crystalline water, zinc carbonate, salts, and silt—through high-temperature calcination at 800°C. It also serves as the core basis for manufacturers to determine unit prices and grade classifications, and must not be confused with or used interchangeably with the wet-basis content of uncalcined material.

The EDTA complexometric titration method is commonly used in factories; it is an internationally recognized, low-cost testing method and a standard procedure for in-house quality control. In addition to the EDTA complexometric titration method, there are also XRF fluorescence non-destructive testing and ICP spectroscopic analysis, which are specifically used for verifying export and high-end batches. Higher zinc oxide purity does not necessarily mean better product performance. When used in rubber vulcanization, 99.7% high-purity ordinary zinc oxide has a relatively large particle size and exhibits strong reactivity inertness;

In contrast, modified kẽm oxit hoạt tính with a purity of around 97% exhibits significantly higher vulcanization efficiency than high-purity ordinary zinc oxide. Furthermore, low-purity raw materials may contain excessive soluble salts, which can directly cause rubber blooming, paint film blistering, and reduced water resistance. They also increase the total zinc concentration in factory wastewater, thereby raising environmental treatment costs.

Kẽm Oxit

Specific surface area refers to the total external surface area available for adsorption per unit mass of zinc oxide powder, measured in m²/g. The national standard uniformly employs the BET nitrogen adsorption method for testing, and it is the most intuitive physical indicator for distinguishing between ordinary zinc, active zinc, and nano-zinc. The higher the value, the finer the particle size and the more porous the structure of the powder. This results in a larger surface area for contact and reaction with rubber vulcanization additives and coating resins, leading to stronger activation, rust prevention, and adsorption capabilities, and allowing for lower addition levels in formulations.

Heavy metal content is the baseline indicator for product compliance and environmental protection. National standards and EU REACH regulations strictly control four major heavy metals: lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As); trace elements such as iron and copper are also subject to additional controls. Excessive levels of iron or copper can directly cause paint discoloration and blackening, as well as accelerated aging of rubber. The mainstream testing method is ICP-OES spectral trace analysis, with accuracy reaching the ppm level.

Particle size distribution, commonly referred to in the industry as “sieve residue,” refers to the mass percentage of coarse particles remaining after a specified quantity of zinc oxide powder passes through standard test sieves. Common standard sieve sizes include 45 μm (325 mesh) and 75 μm (200 mesh). This is a physical indicator used to control powder fineness, agglomeration, and impurity particles, and it directly affects the appearance and texture of the finished product.

Moisture content refers to the proportion of free moisture adsorbed within the zinc oxide powder, as distinct from crystalline water, and is a controllable parameter during storage and transportation. Standard testing methods include the loss-on-drying method in a 105°C oven (commonly used in production facilities) and the Karl Fischer titration method (for trace, high-precision detection).

Excellent performance in a single parameter does not guarantee overall quality; all five of these key indicators must be balanced to ensure long-term, stable production.

As a general-purpose powdered raw material used for rubber vulcanization activation, industrial anti-corrosion coatings, rubber and plastic fillers, antibacterial agents in personal care products, and chemical catalysts, zinc oxide must undergo mandatory testing for five key parameters upon arrival and before warehousing: purity, specific surface area, heavy metal content, sieve analysis, and moisture content.
